Minister’s Conference of Winston-Salem and Vicinity School Board Forum

Action4Equity was asked to create the questions for the board members in attendance and help lead the discussion. The following questions are among those submitted for discussion.
- What is the status of the new Ashley Academy?
- Has the district identified any negative implications around the last rezoning effort that many felt further segregated the schools? & What are the current objectives of the School Choice Committee?
- Are there any plans to recruit teachers with higher levels of capacity across the district with an emphasis on the low performing schools?
- How will instruction change in Title I schools from low level worksheets to higher order strategies from the upper end of Bloom’s taxonomy which focuses on cultivating and strengthening critical thinking skills?
- What is being done to help teachers understand how to utilize an assets based orientation towards poor black and brown students?
- What criteria beyond just a warm body is being used to determine teachers eligibility for additional pay to teach in the Remagine Schools?
- How can the Minister’s Conference align with the School Board in order to strengthen community relations with the leadership and staff at local public schools?
- Will graduation from the Howard University Urban Superintendents Program be considered as an important credential in selecting the next superintendent?
- Are there plans to evaluate the current Instructional Superintendent’s effectiveness in leading for Instructional improvement and closing achievement gaps for children in Title I Schools?
- How do you see the faith based community collaborating with the school system in an effort to increase more positive outcomes, especially in Title 1 schools?
- The achievement gaps in 3rd grade reading and mathematics, 8th grade reading and mathematics, and the State required ACT test have persisted for several years; What do you see as the causes of those gaps.
- What system-wide strategies have you identified to work on the causes for those achievement gaps?
